WHO Will Blink - SECEDE or, In Defense of PM Najib?

( Allahyarham Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Talib - former Mufti of FT passes away, Al-Fatihah )

A really, really, really Unbelievable game of High Stakes Poker is being played in my homeland,
...even better than what was at stake in Casino Royale!

Amongst the chips on the table or power cards played are ...well...to quote the youngest chess master in Malaysia's 58 years of history i.e. CM(Candidate Master) Amir Faiz when he was 6 years old -
" ...I can't think anymore. If I think my brains will become smaller! "(NAG 2013, UTP-Perak).

On a Friday morning, almost a month back a legal practitioner and I met some VIPs from Sarawak in a KL hotel. The purpose of the meeting is for me to propose an economic initiative which can result in around 20-50 employment opportunities (if not more) to be created in mainly the state capital of Kuching. The jobs which can be created will predominantly be in the finance/securities sector. A spin-off from the initiative can also differentiate Sarawak from the rest of Malaysia during the state government's investment roadshows abroad. In a serious mode sprinkled with dosses of humour we talked about the reason(s) and possibility(ies) of Sarawak seceding and together with Johor, forming a separate nation. Various name combinations were offered and economic sectors and possible co-operations discussed.

Fast forward to October 2015 and who would have thought that the Crown Prince of Johor (fondly referred to as TMJ) would have suggested secession if the terms of the forming of the Federation of Malaysia are not met. There must have been strong reasons for TMJ to highlight the matter publicly. The way the country is being run might be one of them.

Less I be accused of being an agent provocateur - I am writing this for academic discussions and theoretical purposes as well as theoretically speaking, IF and that's a very BIG IF Johore were to leave Malaysia tomorrow, Ministers and Deputy Ministers like Hishamuddin, Azalina, Ahmad Maslan 3.85, Nur Jazlan (ex-PAC Chairman) as well as MCA's T.Y.Chua, J.S.Wee and MIC President Subramaniam will be out of a job automatically.

Economically, perhaps even Iskandar Malaysia(IM) can be reinvigorated. The following is the profile of the nationalities of consumers searching for property to be purchased in Iskandar released by the iProperty Group during its PC yesterday. Notice the absence of Arab nationalities? Perhaps, they are in the 2% unaccounted for?

Historically, UMNO's track record in preserving Johor have been nothing to shout about. Though Johor is often seen as a Fixed Deposit of sorts for the ruling coalition of BN and its Alliance predecessor, 2 UMNO Presidents had in one way or another 'allowed' Johor lands to be reduced. The Father of 2 Countries allowed it (read from THE fringes 8th September "2 Countries but 1 Father" Column HERE) while later on PM Abdullah Badawi allowed the case of Pulau Batu Puteh to be tried at the ICJ. We all know what happened next - Rais Yatim declaring the ICJ decision as a 'Win-Win' decision for both countries!

( MORE to FOLLOW )

This is the second week in a row that I'd to change what was meant to be published.
Last week I intended to write about how despite the controversies surrounding some overseas purchase or investment made by certain government agencies or GLCs, the weak Ringgit would enable these investments to be pretty much profitable if divestments can be made and the money brought back to resuscitate the local economy. However, the decree by the Malay Rulers on 1MDB put a stop to my arguments.

The title for my column this week should have been simply " In Defense of Najib! ".
I would then proceed to outline how or what Najib should do to retain BN if not UMNO's failing and falling grip on power in the next GE. However, a threat of secession however remote is a plot that is too tempting to be passed over and needs to be written about especially since my discussions regarding this matter on the 11th of September with the Sarawakians.

My supposed article this week would have started with an analysis of the toll increase.
Though the decision is cursed at by almost all motorists, I take the stand that this is a move that I would have taken myself if I was the PM though it seemed to be a very unpopular move. Reason being is that a majority of tolled road users are not my i.e. BN's supporters as they tend to live in the urban areas. As most are aware the urban voters have not been kind to the BN coalition. With the exception of the parliamentary seats of the F.T.of Putrajaya and Johor Bahru, all other seats are in the hands of the now defunct Pakatan Rakyat.

I might as well use the amount 'saved' from subsidising the toll rates for urban motorists to reward my (BN) supporters which lives in the 'Malay heartlands'. The reward should normally take the form of targeted subsidies for specific demographics. An example is increasing the BR1M payouts or assistance or whatever one wishes to call it. Others will be increasing education opportunities via additional places in boarding schools and universities coupled with easy access to financing the studies like scholarships or PTPTN loans, giving grants and subsidies for the farmers/settlers and fishermen. The normal "frog in a coconut shell" thinking...but then again that's just me. A reason why I am not the PM.

( PC by Dato' Dr. Zulkifli Mohamad - the Mufti of KL
on Friday, 16th October 2015 at the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery around 3.15pm )

In concluding this week's column, I would lkie to pay tribute to the former Mufti of the Federal Territory (1991-1997) and also former Imam Besar of the Putrajaya mosque i.e. Allahyarham Tan Sri Dato' Abdul Kadir Talib who passed away at the age of 86 on the morning of Friday, 16th October 2015 after subuh(dawn) prayers.

It was my first PC at a Muslim cemetery or any cemetery area for that matter. Many would have notice that the clouds were covering the cemetery area in Bukit Kiara but perhaps many may not have notice that not only were the clouds covering the area but also the fact that in the middle of the clouds there was an opening with a ray of sunlight coming through to lit the area. Immediately after what was a fast burial, the heavens opened up and it started to drizzle just as the remaining attendees were leaving the area. AL - FATIHAH to Allahyarham Tan Sri Dato' Abdul Kadir Talib.

( This week's column is based on amongst others a myriad of  attendances at meetings, events or PCs held in the F.T. of K.L(Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery, Mid Valley & TTDI)., Selangor (Ara Damansara, Kelana Jaya and Sri Damansara) and the F.T. of Putrajaya.  )

HAZY DAYS Ahead for MALAYSIA !!!

& Environmentally UNHEALTHY

( Generations, Wondering what will happen to Malaysia.
The picture though is much brighter and more positive if one is to look ahead )
* view from the Ferry in PP, looking ahead towards the Mainland.

This week's article is derived from a motley crew of;-
- a Motor Club (whose members are predominantly based in KL and Selangor);
- a DBA/MBA preview (who had attendees coming not just from KL/Selangor, not only come from Johor and Pulau Pinang but also from Thailand, Myanmar and a few African countries);
- a Co-operative first AGM (whose members came from Perak, Pahang, NS, Melaka, Johor in addition to Selangor and the Federal Territories of KL and Putrajaya);
- agents and staff of a financial planning outfit;
Also, people met along the way from KL to Pulau Pinang and back, not forgetting the media corps who attended the 9/9 post-UMNO Supreme Council meeting PC.

(Article to follow)
...but first, a 25 seconds clip of the post-UMNO Supreme Council Meeting media conference attended by The ASEAN 500.

( Scrutinise the faces of the UMNO leaders on stage )

The "Muka Ketat" (Tight-faced) of those seated on the stage during the PC says it all.
It's obvious that nobody got what they wanted. When Ku Nan (UMNO's Secretary General) ended the PC after the third question, many looked at each other. Even before the PC begun, word filtered down an hour or so earlier that its status quo.

Despite many leaders being seen in Putrajaya in the run-up to the Supreme Council meeting and an alleged list of leaders being dropped, nobody significant was expelled. Thus, despite initial confidence of certain factions being able to push through their agenda it can be concluded that the President and forces aligned to him don't have the numbers, yet! An unofficial truce may have been called, respite for both sides to contemplate which card(s) is(are) to be used next and to retrieve casualties littered on many fronts. Things may definitely change though in the run up to December's UMNO assembly.

As for now, the only party growing stronger is PAS. The dissidents had voluntarily purged themselves save for Husam and a few insignificant others. Bersih 4.0 proved that newpolpat(new political party) PAN are unable to ensure a substantial turnout of Malays as opposed to a PAS' directive. As a result of this miscalculation, DAP and the majority Chinese crowd in Bersih 4.0 are again seen as power grabbers which PM Najib and his merrymakers will definitely capitalise on in the coming weeks if not days.

While the soon to be launched Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) may have some support in the Klang Valley, a survey done over the weekend in Pulau Pinang indicated a low exodus of members from PAS to the party much accused of being DAP-funded and evangelical (it was previously doing the rounds as Gerakan Harapan Baru(GHB) or,  translated means the evangelical sounding "New Hope Movement"). Even those who had joined PAN or Amanah in the initial euphoria are privately having doubts. A message I received from a PAS supporter working in the government says it all -
" Look at how long Ku Li and Semangat lasted;
and Sabu is not even half the man Ku Li was.
Go do the maths! "

One can call PKR a lot of things but they are no definitely no idiots in trying to maintain their grip on power in Selangor. The disastrous "Langkah Kajang" caused many neutrals to shy away from them having seen the terribly ugly side of PKR thirst for power at the expense of respected Tan Sri Khalid who also had backing from the palace. Many would have sounded the alarm bells of the existence of a purported Islamic and amicable PAN which is easier for DAP and its supporters to swallow but which in essence is actually a more Islamic PKR chasing after perhaps the same pool of supporters. When PKR's President Wan Azizah and MB Azmin announced they will still talk to PAS, the power preservation game is still in play.

Though a far-fetched scenario, a weakened UMNO and a stronger PAS could realistically form many state governments if snap elections were called. Then again in the "100 days of Madness" starting from the day an UMNO Deputy President and the second-ranked Vice-President being dropped in a cabinet reshuffle, stranger things have happenened and I dare say will continue to happen!

( This week's column is based on surveys conducted in KL(Bukit Kiara, PWTC and TTDI), Selangor (Kelana Jaya, R&R Awan Besar and Shah Alam) and Pulau Pinang (both Island and Mainland). The writer was totally exhausted after the trip to Pulau Pinang only finishing the column a few minutes before the publication dead-line.)

SINGAPORE - 2 "Fathers" BUT 1 Country or, is it 2 Countries BUT 1 "Father"?

POLITICS - Column: " from THE fringes "
by Amirul HM
Kuala Lumpur & Singapore City, MALAYSIA (before 1965 Separation)
Tuesday, 8th September 2015

a Country with 2 "Fathers"
or,
Is it 1 "Father" but 2 Countries?

( Mr. Yusok Ishak, The First President of Singapore? or is it Yusof Ishak!? )

The future of Singapore, at least for the next couple of years will be decided this Friday.
Singaporeans will be going to the polls this week despite Malaysians having a stronger case of voting in a general elections "now" on this side of the Johore causeway. Having just celebrated their 50th year of independence the ruling PAP should pull it through but it'll be no cruise from what I gather.

History is written by the victors and nowadays the capitalists. Hence, many will dispute this version of history I am about to write. After all, its written by a writer who had only "learned" official history till form 3 and even then will now and again challenge the official version being regurgitated by the writer's history teacher i.e. Teacher Kassim. So much so that at one time he was challenged by the teacher along these lines - "...if you think you know better than me, why don't you teach history to the class!?".
To which the challenge was accepted albeit hesitantly at first and ended up with the writer earning the nickname and being called "Cikgu"(meaning teacher in the Malay language) for the rest of his stay in junior college.

( The Tunku, Father of  Malaya 1957, Malaysia 1963 and Singapore 1965 )

Many Malaysians can easily identify with Tunku Abdul Rahman being the Father of Independence. The mistake many Malaysians make is identifying the Tunku as the Father of Independence for Malaysia whereas by right he is the "Bapa Kemerdekaan MALAYA 1957" or  Father of Independence for MALAYA in 1957. By the same virtue, he is the Father of Malaysia in 1965.

By the same token, even if asked to take an oath many on both sides of the causeway will be loathed to admit that the Tunku is also the Father of Independence for Singapore in 1965. Many, many, many Singaporeans and Malaysians will argue against this depending on which version of history they are "comfortable" with but the fact of the matter is HE(The Tunku) IS the Father of Independence for both countries Malaya(now Malaysia) and Singapore. I suppose, the official version for goodwill purposes will always be The Tunku is the Father of Independence for Malaya(Malaysia) and K.Y.Lee or LKY, the Father for Singapore.

This is where it gets interesting and would be dealt with in Part 2 of this article.
Briefly, in terms of territory I am wary and worried whenever Malaysia have a PM from the north. Reason being 2 out of 3 PMs from the northern states "lost" precious soil to Singapore.
(more story and/or history to follow).

( Flag of Singapore )

Having watched Singapore grow over the years, initially through the eyes of a youngster watching his cousins play football on the once numerous fields available in Woodlands, then mainly through regular visits to relatives from the time the Malaysian Ringgit and Singapore Dollar was at parity till now I've taken an interest in what's happening across the causeway. Regular updates from not just relatives but also a few Singaporean neighbours, friends working in the Republic and even a TV co-presenter ensured I was updated on a regular basis. In fact, I was supposed to head down south for the SEA Games and ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship in June but a brief stay in the hospital negated that. Hence, a trip is long overdue.

From what I gather though all seemed peaceful on the surface there are many simmering issues. The substantial working population of foreigners is an eternal flashpoint. So too are issues like public transportation, the disconnect between elitists highly paid lawmakers and blue-collared Singaporeans and also arising issues from national service to name a few. Money or the lack of it seemed to be a recurring theme. As an example when I pose the question - "Why is it despite Singapore being touted as a high income nation in the world, the Bangladeshis working in Malaysia earns more than Singapore's national service conscripts?" and this too with an exchange rate of RM3 = SGD1. To which half past six answers are normally given

In the final game plan for a better quality of life, I would like to convey to my relatives, friends and Singaporeans in general - "Singaporeans, Moving Forward - May you vote for the Best Leaders amongst you and All the Best for the upcoming General Elections."

" To THE Point " Please, Mr. PM!

POLITICS - Column: " from THE fringes "
Bandaraya Bersejarah-MELAKA & Damansara Utama-SELANGOR, MALAYSIA
Tuesday, 18th August 2015

But Always, I Come back To THE Point.
And THE POINT is ?
What's YOUR Answer Dato' Seri Najib ???

I need to pre-empt readers and former viewers -  No, I am not referring to " To the POINT " a socio- political economy talk show which I once hosted for Capital TV on Hypp TV-UNIFI for a few seasons starting in 2013 and was also the Consultant Producer.
The POINT for me is a certain unmarked place in Melaka town, somewhere between Dataran Pahlawan and the row of shophouses on reclaimed land. Whenever I pass by "the POINT" in Melaka it echoes and re-echoes - " Duty, Country / Empire and ..."

When I was very young, my father ensured that I had a taste of Kampung (the Malay term for Village) life in Jasin, Melaka. Often, he would take me for a drive to Melaka town, passing by many historical sites and buildings (which tourists flocks to now) but were then in the 70s not really 'appreciated'  nor commercialised. My father will now and again take different routes but always we would end up at a row of food stalls just off to the right off Dataran Pahlawan if one were to be facing the Melaka Straits. Over a bowl of Ice-Kacang and him normally taking a coconut drink, he will start talking about the history of Melaka and of our family and of how Melaka achieved greatness and why it fell etc etc.

Well what did you expect from a 5 or 6-year old kid? Attention? When someone is going on and on about history!? I would like to think that I was a bit smarter though and gave the impression to my father that I was paying attention only because I can order my second bowl of Ice Kacang(nuts) littered with sweetcorn. Nowadays, time and again I can remember certain stories like Si Kitul, Si Tanggang, bloody fights or battles, the war to retake Melaka in 1517 and 1521 which have been relegated to just a line or brief footnote in Malaysian history books by 'unchecked' historians. At times, I was regaled over Ice Kacang and some finger food on the role the family played in WW2 and in the Communist Insurgency as well as the cowardly Brits labels hurled at the MPAJA in addition to the family sufferings at the hands of Japanese and Communists alike. A recurring theme in all stories seemed to be the role played by traitors.

Coming back, To THE Point:
Dato' Seri Najib bin TUN ABDUL RAZAK,
YOU've not and never answered YOURSELF whether a sizeable amount have been deposited into your personal account at AM Bank

Instead, the people have been served with this:-
(SPRM Media Statement on August 2015)

A statement by the SPRM or MACC which instead of ending the saga you've created, led to an unprecedented visit by the Police to the MACC office. Subsequently, MACC officials were given transfer orders presumably for "cold storage" purposes.

Perhaps, you should have taken heed of the visit by 17(or was it 19, I can't recall) UMNO Supreme Council Members during the holy month of Ramadhan instead of thinking it as a Hollywood script.

Coming back, To THE POINT:
Dato' Seri Najib bin TUN ABDUL RAZAK,
YOU've not and never answered YOURSELF which Country(ies) gave the RM2.6 Billion Political Donation stated by the MACC Media Statement in August 2015.

If its:-
PM Lee Hsien Loong or Singapore - What else have you given up or piece(s) of land surrendered?
President Obama or USA - Does that mean Malaysia will sign the TPPA?

If you claim it's a Middle East country, then if its:-
Iran - Does that mean Syiah is now allowed to be practiced in Malaysia?
Saudi Arabia - another version of Islam being consented ??
.......surely its not the Pariah Terrorist state of Israel???

Perhaps, you should have clarified the matter when it was raised during discussions between your Goodself, and UMNO's Deputy President, Treasurer and Secretary-General on GE13 funding instead of thinking of it as a Bollywood script.

Coming back, To THE POINT:
Dato' Seri Najib bin TUN ABDUL RAZAK,
YOU've not and never answered anything YOURSELF Mr.Prime Minister.
And, because of this there exists a lacuna(e) in the script.

Whatever your story, Please Come Clean or Forever Be Tainted !!!

Please come clean as there's still a glimmer of hope.
Based on last week's survey in Perak, Selangor and KL...there's still a glimmer,
...some Perakians are seeing it as nothing more than Johor making way for Perak;
Based on last weekend's poll in NS and Melaka...there's still some ember,
...a diminishing minority are saying you've been framed.

Whatever your story, Please Come Clean or Forever Be Tainted !!!

" To THE Point " Please, Mr. Prime Minister of Malaysia!

When 1 SEN Received is worse than 10 BILLION Taken.......and of RM2.6Billion being compared to Cows!

POLITICS - Column: " from THE fringes "
Bandaraya Bersejarah-MELAKA & Beruas-PERAK, MALAYSIA
Tuesday, 11th August 2015

When 1 Sen RECEIVED is Worse Than RM10 Billion TAKEN,
.......and of RM2.6B explained away,
using an analogy of 2 cows received in a Wedding!

Over the weekend and a bit more, my travels took me to Tapah-Perak passing by the Tronoh Mines, skirting a few tombs of previous Perak Sultans as well as the final resting place of Puteri Limau Purut before spending the night at a chalet in Kg.Bakar Bata, Beruas-Perak. The following day I was invited to give a "History and Economics" presentation at a history programme organised jointly by local organisers and a history NGO in Kg.Banjar before heading down south to Melaka in the afternoon. After a heavy downpour I finally secured a room in Bandaraya Melaka, near the "iconic and ironic" A-Famosa fort and Dataran Pahlawan at around 1am after being turned away at a few(around 6-7 hotels) 2-3star hotels as the hotels were fully occupied.

( History and Economics presentation in Kg.Banjar, Beruas-PERAK,
at an event titled "HIKMAH Beruas,XV- Jejak Batu Bersurat )

I was dead-tired and could have chosen to stay in Ayer Keroh but opted for a place near the "iconic and ironic" places as I wanted to be reminded that the then Melaka Empire had been "taken" not only by the Potugese and Dutch but that they got assistance from vested parties or traitors for short!
A fact that I had wanted to reflect upon apart from some other sentimental reasons.
Between KL to Beruas to Melaka city and then back to KL, there were respites at a few places such as Tapah, Kg.Gajah. Beruas and Tronoh in Perak, Dengkil in Selangor, Pedas Linggi, Seremban and Bandar Enstek in Negeri Sembilan as well as Ayer Keroh in Melaka. All in a distance of around 1000 KM were covered... 977km to be precise for this article.

It's been said that during the time of Noah, God had wanted to clear the earth of impurities including the devil. However, the devil got an 'official' invitation into Noah's Ark when one of the animal (I can't recall which....perhaps a Jackass Donkey or Brainless Monkey or even the Elephant in the room...ooops Ark ) refused to budge and an invitation to treat in the form of "Get in You 'Damned' Thing" or something along those lines were uttered. Relate that to the present political calamity and hopefully readers will know where I am coming from and headed to. If not, TOO BAD!

During my travels, I came across many UMNO grassroots members and a few serving and retired elected politicians many of whom were from the ruling Barisan Nasional. A conversation that will remain in my mind indefinitely goes something like this translated version:-
.......after some mundane chit-chat,
Me:
What are your thoughts on people or grassroots members saying there's a disconnect between your party's leaders and the grassroots? What's with the RM3,000 shoes worn or, RM30-40,000 watches on the wrist where pictures have been publicised? And now, this RM2.6B issue.

VIP:
Where got!?
(...after some pause, he proceeded to lift the bottom part of his trousers to show the black shoes he's wearing)
...even I only wear RM300 shoes, where got RM3,000!
The RM30-40,000 watches worn by Ministers are all lies perpetrated by vested parties ("puak-puak berkepentingan" in Malay). The watches are actually imitations worth RM700-900, even I have one. If you give me some time, I can show it to you.

Now, "Poor" Me:
(...with raised eye-brows and trying very hard to remain nonchalant about what I heard......actually, was too shocked to move!)
...How about this RM2.6 billion political donation?

VIP:
All political parties receives donations.
It's like this lah - when I wanted to get married there were people offering gifts to me...even 2 cows.
Don't question their motives, you just take lah....most probably they want to get 'pahala' (in Malay, means something like good deeds for one's records in the herefter).

Now, and "Even Poorer" Me:
Oooohhhhhhhh.....Emmmmm......(what else can I say?)
( My Thoughts - Wow! RM1.3Billion per cow and What with these people and cows? )

Actually, I've no stomach to continue writing this article as it insults my god-given intelligence.
Hence, will let it be for now...My Apologies!

CHECK+.......and almost Mate++!

POLITICS - Column: " from THE fringes "
Bandar Baru Bangi-Selangor, MALAYSIA
Sunday, 2nd August 2015

In chess, often the first player who "checks, identified as check/move+" need not necessarily be the player who wins in the end. Heck, the same player can even 'checks' all he wants but if there's no 'king safety' one check from the pressured opponent might be all that is required to end the game especially now where the rules are for a 'silent check'.

Apply that to present Malaysian politics and eerily the game of chess comes to live.
The motley forces aligned to bring down the just emerging Bugis-warrior PM have been dong just that. They've been checking all over the place.
Check+: PM have been 'kowtowing' to the Chinese.
Check+: 1MDB rumblings.
Check+: Tabung Haji and other entitiy(ies) linkages to 1MDB.
Check+: Wall Stree Journal(WSJ) expose!
Check+: PM Dato' Seri Najib Razak no-show at the "Nothing to Hide" forum before fasting month.
Check+: " Day of the 5, 6, 7 and counting Tan Sri's"
             (as per Indonesia's Kandang Buaya. No of Tan Sri's depends on who you talk to);
Check+: Audience with the YDA...on a day now 'deleted' from history?
CHECK+: " PLEASE, fill up your OWN example(s)! I lost count of how many checks. "

The motley forces have been doing just that i.e. endlessly 'Checking' the Bugis-warrior PM version 2.0 and with each check the motley forces have been exposing their pawns and lately the other important pieces whilst at the same-time exposing the king to his own devices.

Alas, the voting population now realised how dangerous a counter-check is.
Check+: The AG being 'retired'.
Check+: Cabinet Reshuffled. DPM and Ministers dropped.
Check+: New DPM and Ministers. Power Consolidated.
Check+: Mulitple arrests made
Check+: ???

Episode 2 begins on Monday tomorrow with me possibly meeting a member of the Cabinet.
Please ensure keropok and drinks are purchased beforehand.
