In conjunction with Malaysia's 58th Merdeka Day celebrations, the  Kuala Lumpur Chess Association or KLCA will be organising the 8th edition of the Kuala Lumpur International Open Chess Competition 2015 this year on the 30th and 31st of August 2015. The event referred to simply as KL Open 2015, will be held at the Cititel Hotel, Midvalley Kuala Lumpur with Kasparov Asia-Pacific Foundation and IGB Corporation Berhad as its main sponsors.

( KLCA President - Mat Ropi Husein )

The ASEAN 500 spoke to KLCA's Mat Ropi Husein, the new President of KLCA who had just taken over the leadership after previous President IA Peter Long resigned in June of this year. In the interview, Mat Ropi invites chess players not only from Malaysia but also from ASEAN and other countries to come to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the Merdeka event and at the same time vie for the RM12,000 prize money at stake. There will be 2 categories in this year's event, the Open and Juniors U-16. The U-16 category was introduced by KLCA to help with the development of junior talents not only at KL state level but also for the national level as well which have been sorely missing.

As at time of interview with the KL Open 2015 Tournament Director i.e. Mr. Ng Ling Gee on Friday, 14 August 2015, more than 50 players from 5 countries had expressed their interest to participate in the event. Registration is still open and will close next week on Friday, 21st August 2015 at 5PM.
The 2015 edition of the KL Open sees Effective Commerce as the event organiser and  IA Peter Long as its Chief Arbiter.
